George and Carrie Judd Montgomery were the founders of the Home of Peace, a non-profit missionary service agency incorporated with the State of California. From its beginning in 1893, the primary purpose of the Home has been to serve missionaries and ministers of all denominations.
George Simpson Montgomery was born on January 14, 1851, in northern Ireland of Scotch Presbyterian parents. Mr. Montgomery came to the United States and California when he was only 16. When he grew older, he prospered in mining in Mexico. Returning to San Francisco, he became a successful broker.
Carrie, Faith and George Montgomery |
Carrie Judd Montgomery had a profitable personal ministry in Buffalo, New York, which included a house that was called "Faith Home". Also, she started editing "Triumphs of Faith", a monthly publication with worldwide circulation for several decades.
After their marriage in 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery took up residency in the Bay Area where they took an active interest in Christian service enterprises. Among these was the construction of the Home of Peace, built to help meet the needs of the world-wide Christian community. It soon became a way station for missionaries with San Francisco as their port of departure and return.
Literally hundreds of missionaries have felt the warmth of the Christian atmosphere as they made the Home of Peace a quiet stopping place in their travels.
Guests from all over the United States have also enjoyed the friendly hospitality of the Home of Peace since its beginning.
Mrs. Montgomery writes about the Home of Peace: "When Mr. Montgomery went out with the builder to show him where to locate the house, a lovely snow-white dove came and circled around and around my dear husband's head. When he came in and told me about this, we thought it was significant and said, 'We will call it the Home of Peace!'".
